A collaboration between METRO BOULOT DODO and Bathysphere will utilise and develop existing interests and skills in performance art, installation, digital audio / music production and the use of new technology in performance. Through the use of multi-media the two groups will produce two performance installations which take participants on a journey through Abbey Pumping Station, Leicester and the former colliery site at Snibston Discovery Park, Coalville. This project will consolidate a growing symbiotic relationship between METRO BOULOT DODO and Bathysphere which will culminate in two site-specific skill-sharing opportunities and feed into future separate and collaborative projects. Fundamentally, their collaboration permits a bi-lateral exchange of creative ideas, musical and performative techniques, technical knowledge of sound, lighting and digital video and education in respective artforms.
Abbey Pumping Station, now a museum but last operated in 1964, holds a number of steam driven pumps which dealt with sewage from the Leicester area. The nature of the building means that out of the five floors each has very different characteristics. Using the atmosphere suggested by each floor the journey is intended not only to create a theatrical experience, but also to draw upon the history and function of the building and be as informative as it is entertaining.
At Snibston the site is spread over a larger area with several separate buildings. The fact that the site has been left untouched since its closure lends the place an authentic atmosphere. The artists will take the audience on a journey through the area and use digital technologies, video, live performance and sound (sourcing interviews with ex-miners and local residents) to evoke the time when the pit was in operation.
Conceptually, Pumpit will focus on the idea of chasing death / ghosts around the buildings. Through the use of music, performance and new technology audience members may hear incidents that they cannot see, or the aftermath of an accident that happened in the building's past. Fragments of incidents will be pieced together on a tour of the buildings with allusions to the ideas of absolution and Heaven / Hell.
